Afyon Light Marble
Afyon Light Marble (commonly referred to in the industry as Afyon White, Afyon Sugar, or Afyon Cream marble) is a premium natural stone composed almost entirely of recrystallized carbonate minerals—primarily calcite CaCO3—with minor inclusions of siliciclasts and trace elements that dictate its veining. It is a non-foliated metamorphic rock quarried in the Iscehisar region of Afyonkarahisar, Turkey, and is celebrated as one of the oldest and most historically significant white marbles in the world.
Mineralogical & Chemical Content
- Primary Component: Calcite CaCO3. The high concentration of pure, highly crystalline calcium carbonate gives the stone its characteristic translucent, luminous white-to-light-beige background.
- Secondary Minerals (Siliciclasts): Inclusions of silica-bearing minerals, quartz grains, or occasional clay minerals form the structural variations.
- Trace Minerals & Oxides: Subtle concentrations of iron oxides, manganese, or organic material create the iconic soft grey, light brown, or delicate yellowish-gold veining patterns embedded within the stone.
Physical Properties & Structural Composition
The stone’s geological formation under intense heat and pressure yields a massive, tightly interlocked crystalline matrix:
- Density: Highly compact, averaging around 2,700 – 2,730kg/m3
- Porosity & Water Absorption: Extremely low water absorption rate of approximately 0.11% by weight, making it exceptionally waterproof and resistant to staining compared to more porous stones.
- Compressive Strength: Robust structural integrity reaching roughly 69.95 MPa, allowing it to withstand high pressure.
Afyon White Marble is a stunning and highly sought-after natural stone that is quarried in the Afyon region of Turkey. It is renowned for its exquisite white color, distinct veining patterns, and luxurious appearance.
The primary characteristic of Afyon White Marble is its pure white background, which creates a clean and timeless aesthetic. The white hue is typically consistent throughout the stone, providing a bright and elegant canvas that can elevate the ambiance of any space.
What sets Afyon White Marble apart and gives it its unique charm are the intricate veining patterns that adorn the surface. Delicate veins in shades of gray, beige, or gold meander across the white background, creating an enchanting visual effect. The veining patterns can be linear, curving, or even resemble branching veins, further enhancing the marble’s overall beauty.
Quarried in the Afyon region of Turkey, Afyon White Marble is highly regarded for its quality and craftsmanship. The stone is carefully extracted from the earth and cut into slabs or tiles of varying thicknesses, ready to be incorporated into architectural and design projects.
Afyon White Marble is prized for its versatility and can be used in a wide range of applications. It is commonly employed in flooring, wall cladding, countertops, vanity tops, fireplace surrounds, and other decorative accents. Its pure white color and exquisite veining bring a touch of elegance and luxury to any interior or exterior design.
