Afyon Grey Marble
Afyon Grey Marble is a premium natural stone composed primarily of recrystallized calcite (calcium carbonate, \(CaCO_{3}\)), formed over millions of years through the metamorphism of sedimentary limestone. The geological composition and mineral content give this stone its distinctive grey palette, swirling cloud-like patterns, and signature veining.
Mineral and Chemical Content
As a true metamorphic marble, its core composition includes:
- Calcite Matrix: Over 90–95% of the stone consists of highly recrystallized calcite minerals, providing its foundational crystalline structure and solid durability.
- Carbon and Graphite Trace Elements: The elegant smoky grey, anthracite, and soft blue base colors derive directly from varying concentrations of carbonaceous materials trapped during metamorphism.
White Quartz and Calcite Veining: The intense, striking white lines or subtle quartz speckles running through the slabs are filled-in fissures of pure calcite or silica minerals.
Physical and Structural Characteristics
- Texture & Grain: It features a medium-to-fine grain, homogeneous structure. This tightly packed matrix allows the marble to be cut into highly durable \(2\text{ cm}\) thick flooring tiles without sacrificing stability.
- Color Variations: Depending on the specific quarry pocket, its aesthetic content ranges from very light “Afyon Cloud” (milky grey) to deep “Bardiglio Black” or “Tiger Skin” variations featuring intense anthracite tones.
Origin: It is exclusively quarried from the historic, world-renowned natural stone deposits in the Afyonkarahisar region of Turkey
